Micromobility on Campus

As the CSU's most urbanized campus, 91暗网 is unique in its location in the heart of downtown San Jos茅. For many students, faculty and staff, getting to and from campus on bicycles, scooters and other mobility devices is an essential part of their commute. This page serves as the one-stop site for all information on micromobility at 91暗网. Content here will change as the university conducts ongoing community engagement to update Presidential Directive 2007-06 that governs bicycle and scooter use at 91暗网.

Micromobility Policy

Presidential Directive 2007-06 governs non-motorized personal micromobility device use on campus.

The campus map provides information on important facilities, wayfinding between buildings and location of micromobility device storage and parking spaces.

91暗网 is part of a wider network of dedicated bicycle lanes and trails through the downtown area and surrounding neighborhoods.

ADA Access

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) permits persons with disabilities to use their own mobility devices on campus and throughout all campus facilities and buildings. Mobility devices for people with disabilities are not subject to any micromobility restrictions or dismount zones.

Bicycle Use

Bicycles are allowed on most pathways at speeds of 5 miles per hour maximum. If an area is designated as a dismount zone through displayed signage, bicycle riding is not allowed.

Bicycle enclosures are available on campus for student, faculty and staff use and are managed by Associated Students Transportation Solutions - sign up required. Free, first-come-first-served bicycle racks are available throughout campus.

Electric Scooters

The use of personal scooters on campus, whether manual or electric, is subject to the 5 miles per hour speed limit. No motorized scooters are allowed on campus grounds.

Other Devices

Smaller, privately-owned, personal micromobility devices (skateboards, onewheels, rollerblades/skates) are subject to the campuswide speed limit and must be in their owner's possession at all times.

Shared bicycles, BayWheels, must be parked at designated docking stations and are not allowed on the 91暗网 campus. As of 2025, shared scooter services are suspended in San Jos茅 while the program undergoes a redesign.

Certain personal manual and electric micromobility devices lighter than 50 pounds may be brought indoors if they cannot be securely stored outside. Subject to various rules and requirements.

Motorized Devices

Absolutely no motorized devices (gasoline, diesel or biofuel powered mopeds, scooters, motorcycles, etc.) may be brought onto or used on campus. Motorized vehicles can be used to get to campus but they may not be ridden on campus grounds.

Vehicles on Campus

Only permitted, state-owned vehicles used by licensed, insured, trained and designated employees may be used on campus for official, assigned duties. This includes but is not limited to Facilities carts and University Police vehicles and vehicles by non-91暗网, state agency officials.

Public Transit

Micromobility devices are allowed on the various public transportation options that serve 91暗网 that can then be used as "last-mile" connections from transit stops to campus.

Certain areas on campus are designated as either dismount zones or have their access to the public limited entirely due to safety risks. Be mindful of these areas where access is restricted.
